Bhopal: Apheresis facility introduced in AIIMS
BHOPAL: Apheresis facility has been introduced in AIIMS Bhopal. AIIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Manisha Shrivastava said, “The machine will facilitate the process of drawing particular components of the blood from a donor instead of taking out the blood and drawing components from it later. With the availability of the apheresis machine, only necessary amount of platelets can be acquired from a single donor. This would cut down further complications of platelets gathered from different blood donors.” Lukapheresis can also be done in AIIMS, which will benefit patients of blood cancer. Leukapheresis is a laboratory procedure in which white blood cells are separated from a sample of blood. It is a specific type of apheresis, the more general term for separating out one particular constituent of blood and returning the remainder to the circulation.
A large number of surgeries take place wherein which blood is needed in large quality. At times, a patient under treatment may be in need of platelets, red blood cells or plasma. The process of drawing one of these components would become easy with the availability of this machine.
The blood would now fulfill threefold requirement of platelets, plasma and blood cells for patients. Apheresis is used for the collection of blood components (such a platelets or plasma) as well as for the treatment for certain medical conditions in which a part of the blood that contains disease-provoking elements is removed. On an average a blood bank serves 60 per cent of the blood that is used deriving blood components like plasma, platelets and red blood cells. Patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ donation, weakened immune system and other blood related medical conditions are in need of platelets.
