On February 24, 2018, the nation mourned the loss of one of Bollywood’s biggest superstars, Sridevi. Manish Malhotra, long-time collaborator and friend to the actor, had honoured her memory by sharing a heartfelt tribute. “She now leaves behind a legacy of exceptional work. I want the world to remember her as who she was—an iconic actor, an exceptional person, someone who had her mind and her heart in the right place. This is the first time I’ve lost someone so close, and it feels surreal. I’d known her for 28 years. We were at a wedding together and then, out of nowhere, her sister Srilatha was handing me a silk sari for her funeral. I spoke to her the night she passed away. We talked about everything under the sun, from Janhvi’s film, how beautiful Khushi looked at the wedding to even what she had eaten earlier that day. Even now, so many days later, I still expect my phone to ring, and to hear her discuss an outfit or a project which we can work on together,” he wrote in Vogue India’s April 2018 issue. As we approach her first death anniversary, Malhotra talks about coping with her absence, ahead.

“Sridevi’s loss has been the first death that I have seen so close and it shook me. It has taken me months to get over it. For months she would come in my dreams. I still can’t believe it and already a year has passed. I miss her—I miss her voice, I miss her calls. I miss chatting, catching up, discussing films and clothes, both things that we love. She was, is, and will always remain the most special to me. Her death truly taught me that nothing is permanent in life and that every moment must be lived to the fullest.

“Her passing away is unfortunate and the fact that she didn’t see Janhvi’s first film release is just sad. She was the best mother to her daughters—so protective and concerned; it’s sad and something I will never get over. I don’t mention her much and share the fact that I miss her a lot to Janhvi or Khushi or Boneyji, as it will affect them. Life goes on and has to, and we try to do our best. I make an effort to have a protective and a very honest relationship with Janhvi and Khushi. I am in touch with the girls regularly as I feel I owe that to Ma’am—that’s what I called Sridevi from the first time we meet in 1990 to the day I [last] spoke to her, that morning of the day she passed away. She is truly missed and I still can’t believe it or get over it.”
