A woman dressed as Captain Marvel, a man wearing a Spider-Man suit, another flaunting the golden glove of Thanos -- fans of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) gave Captain Marvel stars a welcome fit for a movie which not just celebrates woman power, but is also the first superhero film from the franchise to release since Stan Lee’s death.

“Excelsior! Thank you Stan. 1922-2018,” screens at the Sands Expo And Convention Centre, which hosted a grand fan event for Captain Marvel, flashed in remembrance of the Marvel comic legend.

It was a sweet start to a Valentine’s Day evening that the franchise’s fans in Singapore would remember for a long time.

The gala became a celebration of everything to do with MCU. There were light sabres, shields, props, posters, figurines and more that fans carried to stand out in the crowd.

Eliciting loud cheers was Marvel veteran Samuel L. Jackson, who famously plays Nick Fury.

Jackson, along with Oscar winning actress Brie Larson -- the lead star of Captain Marvel, and Crazy Rich Asians talent Gemma Chan, as well as Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were here for their only Asia stopover for the film’s promotions.

Looking every bit red carpet-ready, the stars walked down a blue carpet while giving into fans’ requests for photographs and autographs.

Brie, who exuded confidence in a black custom-made Oscar de la Renta ensemble with the Captain Marvel symbol strategically placed on her back, clicked selfies galore with fans who are excited to see her play MCU’s first woman-led superhero film.

Of her role and her learning from it, Brie told the crowd: “Initially I thought there was no way I could ever live up to Carol Danvers, but getting to play her, I learnt so much about having self respect and self confidence and I value myself unapologetically far more than I did before this film.

“Now I get to share it with people from all over the world, which brings me into contact with all kinds of people which continues to grow and expand my knowledge about the world. Thank you and I am so happy to meet you.”

Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the MCU that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes.

“When I was young, I’d listen to the radio, waiting for my favourite song. When they’d play I sing-a-long... it made me smile” - said the popular lyrics of a song by The Carpenters and even today, in a day and age when radio hardly means what it used to at one point of time for some of us.

Remember that signature tune that Akashvani (All India Radio) was known for? It used to be an alternate alarm tune for some of us back in the day when everything else failed. Why? Because the elders in the household would be up and about well before the sun came up and that would mean everyone must wake up too because “early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”… sadly, that’s only remained a proverb one reads in the books or in a moral science lecture. How would I be cool if slept before midnight and woke up before the crack of dawn?

Today on World Radio Day and a day before the day of love, Valentine’s Day, I couldn’t help but wonder where those days of innocent love have gone? The days we’ve heard of in stories from family members and probably watched in a few films too? It was probably the most romantic thing to have your fan mail and a song request chosen by a radio presenter and shared with the listeners who had tuned in. Think of a song like, Tu Mera Chand Main Teri Chandni, or Aaja Sanam Madhur Chandni Mein Hum or a English classic like Unchained Melody or a Beatles song sent to you as a dedication. I’m getting a thrill even writing about it. This was in tandem with the age of the love letters and the excitement (and in some cases, the horror) attached to it. In the voice of popular radio presenter, Ameen Sayani, you hear a message and the name of the person who brings a smile on your face and the song you wanted to hear starts playing, leaving you mesmerised.

Let’s take a walk back down memory lane to the year 1993-94, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan pretty much found each other and ‘magic’ through Tom’s onscreen son Jonah and the radio show. In Bollywood, the 2002 film, Naa Tum Jaano Naa Hum gave us a bit of a sneak peek into the era of love the old fashioned way through a book and a song that makes the always-around-yet-estranged-lovers meet.

In the age when songs are available in more apps than your smartphones can support or a device that can host over 5000 songs; or advertisements and radio spots playing louder than any song (usually the same ones across stations) is it possible to bring love back like it was in the age of pure radio playback and a song dedication to announce your love?

Manish Malhotra and Sridevi’s relationship was one of lifelong friendship and mutual respect for each other’s work. Almost a year after the untimely death of the star, Malhotra gives us a personal account of coping with her absence

On February 24, 2018, the nation mourned the loss of one of Bollywood’s biggest superstars, Sridevi. Manish Malhotra, long-time collaborator and friend to the actor, had honoured her memory by sharing a heartfelt tribute. “She now leaves behind a legacy of exceptional work. I want the world to remember her as who she was—an iconic actor, an exceptional person, someone who had her mind and her heart in the right place. This is the first time I’ve lost someone so close, and it feels surreal. I’d known her for 28 years. We were at a wedding together and then, out of nowhere, her sister Srilatha was handing me a silk sari for her funeral. I spoke to her the night she passed away. We talked about everything under the sun, from Janhvi’s film, how beautiful Khushi looked at the wedding to even what she had eaten earlier that day. Even now, so many days later, I still expect my phone to ring, and to hear her discuss an outfit or a project which we can work on together,” he wrote in Vogue India’s April 2018 issue. As we approach her first death anniversary, Malhotra talks about coping with her absence, ahead.

“Sridevi’s loss has been the first death that I have seen so close and it shook me. It has taken me months to get over it. For months she would come in my dreams. I still can’t believe it and already a year has passed. I miss her—I miss her voice, I miss her calls. I miss chatting, catching up, discussing films and clothes, both things that we love. She was, is, and will always remain the most special to me. Her death truly taught me that nothing is permanent in life and that every moment must be lived to the fullest.

“Her passing away is unfortunate and the fact that she didn’t see Janhvi’s first film release is just sad. She was the best mother to her daughters—so protective and concerned; it’s sad and something I will never get over. I don’t mention her much and share the fact that I miss her a lot to Janhvi or Khushi or Boneyji, as it will affect them. Life goes on and has to, and we try to do our best. I make an effort to have a protective and a very honest relationship with Janhvi and Khushi. I am in touch with the girls regularly as I feel I owe that to Ma’am—that’s what I called Sridevi from the first time we meet in 1990 to the day I [last] spoke to her, that morning of the day she passed away. She is truly missed and I still can’t believe it or get over it.”

Trollpikken or "Troll's Penis" is a scenic rock formation in Rogaland County, Norway frequented by tourists for its trademark phallic shape.

To attract more travellers to the country, the tourist portal Visit Norway and the government foundation Innovation Norway have listed six tips for exciting locations to have sex in. The list's main selling point is Trollpikken or "Troll's Penis", a picturesque rock formation groomed to surpass the selfie magnet of Trolltunga ("Troll's Tongue").

The "to love" list includes sex under the northern lights, in small cabins, at Kråkenes lighthouse or in a steaming sauna. Trollpikken, though, is touted as the hottest option for the extremely adventurous.

"We've created the article to attract new social media followers, that's what we are hoping for. Norway is a well-known brand for nature, but at the same time is known to be a bit boring, perhaps. We try to be a little playful, humorous maybe a bit cheeky", Katrine Mosfjeld of Innovation Norway told the news outlet Kampanje, assuring that Norway is not striving to become a new sex tourism destination.

The innovators have admittedly tried their best to reach a younger, sportier public. The way Mosfjeld jokingly put it, "if our Facebook page was a person, it would be a lady over 60". By her own admission sex may be used to spice things up.

"I realise we're operating on state money, but sometimes we have to go for cheap solutions, too", Mosfjeld laughed. She called sex "the oldest trick in the book". "Make it a little tabloidy, and hope for the best results", she added.

Kjetil Bentsen, who heads the foundation Dalane Kyststi, which, among other things, works to improve the hiking opportunities at and around Trollpikken, does not have any objection to the invitation.

"Well, as long people are in free nature and don't disturb others, I don't see anything wrong with it. As long as they behave", Bentsen told Kampanje. He also admitted that many people probably already had this idea in mind.

It was Bentsen himself who gave the suggestive rock formation its current name and launched it as a tourist attraction and a challenger to Norway's other natural sights, such as Preikestolen, internationally known as the Pulpit Rock.

Heidi Victoria Skeiseid, a postdoctoral fellow in consumer behaviour at Hotel High School at the University of Stavanger, called the recent PR stunt "exciting" and "quite innocent".

How music motivates the brain to learn

Want to get more information about cricbuzz live score? Read this article now: How music motivates the brain to learn

Humans have been making, listening, and dancing to music since time immemorial, and this art can easily soothe or amplify our emotions. New research explains what "chords" music strikes in the brain, and how it relates to certain cognitive processes, particularly learning. cricbuzz live score
Music is a powerful reward that can motivate the brain to do better, researchers show.

In recent years, researchers have shown more interest in how listening to music can pragmatically benefit us in numerous ways.

For instance, studies such as this one, which Medical News Today covered last spring, have suggested that people with Alzheimer's disease who face anxiety and other stressful emotions cope better when they listen to music.

Listening to certain types of music may even alter our perception and change the way we see potential partners, while happy songs can help boost our creativity.

In a new study, the findings of which feature in the journal PNAS, researchers from McGill University in Montreal, Canada have now shown that we can use music to activate the brain's reward center and motivate learning in an error prediction model.

"Although many authors have proposed that the intense emotions and pleasures of music result from expectancies, predictions, and their outcomes [...], direct evidence for this proposition has been lacking," the researchers write.

The current research finally gets to the bottom of this proposition, using a musical reward learning task and functional MRI to understand how pleasurable music motivates the brain to learn and to strive for its reward.

cricbuzz live score

Music as a reward that 'supports learning'

The team worked with 20 participants aged between 18 and 27 years, whom they asked to take part in a musical reward experiment. Each person had to choose a combination of colors and directions, and each combination had a different probability of the participant hearing either pleasant music or a dissonant, unpleasant audio track.

After a few attempts, the participants learned which combinations they should choose in order to increase their chances of accessing the enjoyable music reward.

While the volunteers were participating in this task, the researchers used functional MRI to measure their brain activity. Then, using a special algorithm, the investigators calculated the difference between how often the participants expected to receive their reward and the number of times they actually received it.

On further comparing this data with the functional MRI scans, the team found that correct predictions correlated with heightened activity in a brain area called the nucleus accumbens, which previous research has tied to the experience of pleasure when listening to music.

This finding indicates that music is, in itself, a viable reward and one that can provide enough motivation to the brain to learn new information that will allow it to access this source of pleasure more easily.

Furthermore, the participants who found the right combinations and made the correct predictions the most often, which correlated with heightened activity in the nucleus accumbens each time, also made the most learning progress throughout the tasks.

"This study adds to our understanding of how abstract stimuli like music activate the pleasure centers of our brains," explains study author Benjamin Gold.

"Our results demonstrate that musical events can elicit formally modeled reward prediction errors like those observed for concrete rewards, such as food or money, and that these signals support learning. This implies that predictive processing might play a much wider role in reward and pleasure than previously realized."
