Jasleen Vohra : TV presenter, commentator par excellence
There may be very few people who have not seen her on television (Doordarshan) over the last two decades, interviewing celebrities, presenting various entertainment programmes, literary programmes and giving live commentary at important national and international events , both in Hindi as well as English.
One is talking about Jasleen Vohra, the graceful and charming lady of the small screen who has also been involved in making documentaries. She is a well-known face in India who was also at the Forest Research Institute in the Doon valley, giving the commentary on the grand International Yoga Day celebrations where the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present in June 2018.
Jasleen has a fond relationship with Dehradun as her parents spent the early years of their married life here. She also has relatives here and loves to visit the state. She has interviewed many a celebrity down the years . However, it was this correspondent who was in conversation with her recently.
Jasleen has studied English Literature from Delhi University and believes that her literary background has been a major factor in her career. Her love for reading profusely has always provided her with the depth required to understand people and issues better. “ When I have to interview a person, I always do my homework thoroughly and also make sure that I ask questions that would enable the interviewee to reveal his or her thoughts best and freely. There has to be a delicate balance maintained. I never had any training. This came to me instinctively and intuitively”, says this cheerful and positive lady whom it is such a joy to watch on television. Her interviews in “Aaj Savere” on Doordarshan are classic in nature and can be watched and re-watched anytime.
New anchors and presenters of the electronic media need to learn a lot from people like Jasleen. She is a true role model and reminds one of the dignified and extremely talented TV personalities like Salma Sultan, Mukta Srivastava, Geetanjali Aiyar, Komal GB Singh and Neethi Ravindran. She is carrying that era and aura of graceful presentation forward.
While having coffee on a sunny winter morn, Jasleen told The Pioneer that these days, she is presenting, on a weekly basis, a programme called “New India Sankalp” on Doordarshan.
“Recently, I was in Goa to cover the International Film Festival of India. I got the opportunity to visit some beautiful places, specially the churches.” Her love for cinema helps her greatly in such assignments . “Some years ago, my programme ‘ Cinema –Dil Se “ was very popular on Doordarshan”.
“Kitaabnama-Books and Beyond” was a literary programme she used to present where she interviewed well-known authors . “I am lucky that my work gives me ample opportunities to keep reading”, she says with her sweet and soothing smile. Definitely, it is her love for reading, for cinema and her inclination towards poetry, philosophy and spiritualism that give to all her presentations, whether on TV or live commentaries at events, that extra dimension –the depth and meaning which we often find missing in many anchors and presenters nowadays. Whatever be the assignment, Jasleen always likes to add to it her special touch-something from her own knowledge bank and sensibility. “The best part is that I had never planned my career. One thing followed another and actually, it is destiny which has brought me till here”, says this simple and unassuming professional whose voice is a delight to listen to.
Jasleen says she loves to travel and also to watch films. She also loves to write innovative scripts for which she uses her intuition a lot. Among the “Aaj Savere” interviews, she fondly remembers her interviews with Kiran Bedi and Kailash Satyarthi. You may find Jasleen Vohra sitting quietly with a book and a cup of coffee, looking perfectly at peace with herself and the world.
However, her brilliant mind is always at work and new ideas are constantly brewing there!
Talking to her in person or watching her conduct programmes on TV, one always gets a feeling of calmness that she exudes. Her meditative personality and her gentle demeanour says it all- she actually embodies all the qualities viewers and listeners need to be in touch with in today’s fast moving and noisy world. She is truly the perfect anchor –in more ways and senses than one. Hats off to this woman of substance and confidence, sophistication and class. She has been dedicatedly working in this sphere for more than two decades and built a body of work worth preserving and learning from.
